About Street Fighter II: A Cultural Phenomenon
First hitting the arcades in 1991, Street Fighter II was developed and published by Capcom, an industry titan still resonating in the gaming world today. The successor to the 1987's original Street Fighter, it quickly gained global recognition, becoming the second installment in the now-iconic Street Fighter series. This two-dimensional fighting game was a revelation in the arcades, with its unique command-based moves, a combo system, six-button configuration, and a wide selection of playable characters, each embodying a distinctive fighting style.
Street Fighter II revolutionized the gaming landscape, shifting the competitive focus from attaining personal high scores to intense head-to-head combats. It was pivotal in extending the lifespan of the declining video game arcade business by sparking player's competitive spirit and paving the way for the fighter genre. It also inspired a whole generation of grassroots tournament events, culminating in the Evolution Championship Series (EVO).

Commercial Success and Influence
Beyond its competitive appeal, Street Fighter II witnessed unprecedented commercial success, becoming the best-selling game since the golden age of arcade video games. By 1994, an estimated 25 million people in the United States alone had played the game. In response to this overwhelming success, Capcom released a series of updated versions featuring additional characters and functionalities.
As of 2017, over 200,000 arcade cabinets and 15 million software units of all versions of Street Fighter II had been sold worldwide, grossing an estimated $10 billion in total revenue. This phenomenal success established Street Fighter II as one of the greatest video games of all time and the most influential fighting game ever made, inspiring other producers to create their own fighting series.
Street Fighter II Gameplay: The Basics
In Street Fighter II, players engage in timed one-on-one, close-quarters combat matches, aiming to completely drain their opponent's health bar or have more health remaining when the timer runs out. The first to win two rounds is declared the victor of the match. A second player can join a single-player game at any time, initiating a head-to-head match.
The game adopted the eight-directional joystick and six attack button configuration from its predecessor but introduced multiple playable characters, each with unique fighting styles and special moves, including combos. A tradeoff of strength and speed are provided by three punch buttons and three kick buttons, each of light, medium, and heavy intensity.
