Golden Axe: The Beginning
In the original Golden Axe game, players take control of one of three warriors, each with a unique backstory and a burning desire for revenge against the malevolent dictator Death Adder. This tyrant has wreaked havoc upon the peaceful land of Yuria, bringing untold suffering and claiming innocent lives, including that of Alex, a comrade to our brave heroes. The warriors fight through Death Adder's forces, utilizing their combat skills and powerful magic spells. This original game was a monumental hit, inspiring several ports and sequels.
Sequels and Spin-offs
Golden Axe II
The sequel, Golden Axe II, sees our trio of heroes returning to battle Dark Guld's forces of evil. Although the game was similar in many respects to its predecessor, it introduced new magic for each hero, replacing magic pots with spell books. While some fans found it too reminiscent of the original game, it nevertheless stayed true to the winning formula, maintaining its popularity.
Golden Axe: The Revenge of Death Adder
The Revenge of Death Adder, the third installment, remained an arcade exclusive for many years despite its popularity. Only Gilius Thunderhead, the battle-axe-wielding dwarf, returns, accompanied by a completely new cast of characters. The game introduces multiple paths and a refined magic system, with some magic spells even serving as health replenishments rather than offensive attacks.
Golden Axe III
The third sequel, Golden Axe III, was initially released exclusively in Japan, but later became available in North America and Europe. It introduced a new set of playable characters and a number of gameplay changes, including more complex branching paths and a greater variety of moves. Despite these changes, it didn't receive as much acclaim as its predecessors due to its less colorful graphics and other perceived shortcomings.
Golden Axe: Beast Rider
The last release in the series was Golden Axe: Beast Rider in October 2008. This installment marked the return of Tyris Flare, the amazon warrior from the first games. Beast Rider's reception was less than stellar, and it represents the final entry in the series to date.
