Introduction to "Warriors of Fate"
"Warriors of Fate", known as "Tenchi wo Kurau 2: Sekiheki no Tatakai" (The Devouring of Heaven and Earth II: Battle of Red Cliffs) in Japan, is a legendary side-scrolling beat 'em up game developed and published by Capcom. It is the second arcade game based on the Tenchi wo Kurau manga, following the successful release of Dynasty Wars. First unleashed in arcades worldwide on October 31, 1992, the game was later adapted for the Sega Saturn and PlayStation in 1996, with a mobile version following in 2005. An emulated version of the original game was also included in the Capcom Beat 'Em Up Bundle released digitally for the Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Windows in September 2018.

Gameplay Mechanic in "Warriors of Fate"
"Warriors of Fate" offers nine action-packed stages of beat 'em up combat, each swarming with various enemies like spearmen, archers, strongmen, and bomb-wielding opponents, leading up to a boss fight. The game allows up to three players on-screen simultaneously. With two basic commands, Attack and Jump, characters boast a range of moves typical of Capcom's side-scrollers from the era. The end of each stage is guarded by one or more of Wei's generals, including iconic characters such as Li Dian, Xiahou Dun, Xu Chu, Cao Ren, Zhang Liao, Xu Huang, and the infamous Lu Bu as the final boss. After defeating these adversaries, players must confront and defeat Cao Cao before he escapes.
"Warriors of Fate" also offers an assortment of weapons for players to pick up and wield, along with food items to restore health, scattered in breakable containers throughout the game's levels. The game also includes two bonus stages demanding rapid button pressing. An interesting feature of the game is the ability to summon a warhorse, which adds more attack options for the characters, typically involving pole-arms. Each playable character, except Zhao Yun, has a unique wrestling throw. However, unlike the predecessor Dynasty Wars, Liu Bei is not a playable character in this game.
The Story Behind "Warriors of Fate"
The Japanese version of "Warriors of Fate" is based on the plot of the Romance of the Three Kingdoms, a historical 14th-century Chinese novel by Luo Guanzhong, set during the Three Kingdoms period. The narrative follows Liu Bei's plight in Jingzhou as Cao Cao invades his lands. In the English adaptation, the Three Kingdoms theme is replaced by a fictional realm where an evil overlord Akkila-Orkhan seeks to conquer neighbouring countries.
Reception and Influence of "Warriors of Fate"
The game's popularity in both Japan and North America was confirmed by its ranking as the most popular arcade game and the fifth most popular arcade game respectively. The game's influence has spread beyond its original platform, as evidenced by a hack of Sega's Streets of Rage 2 that includes all four heroes from Warriors of Fate, often referred to as Warriors of Fate 2. Furthermore, a fighting game variation known as Tenchi wo Kurau III: Sangoku Gaiden, also known as Tun Shi Tian Di 3: San Guo Wai Chuan or Chinese Fighter, extends the franchise's reach.
Capcom's "Warriors of Fate" remains a cherished gem in the treasure chest of beat 'em up games, offering a timeless blend of fast-paced combat, captivating story, and a nostalgic trip down the memory lane of arcade gaming. Whether you're a fan of the manga or simply enjoy a good old side-scrolling beat 'em up, "Warriors of Fate" is a title that deserves a place in your gaming library.
